I use the aerosol paint stripper. Just make sure it has toluene in it. Spray the tire down and let the stripper soak into the tire. Depending on the temp it may work fast or slow. If its hot (70*+) I would do 30 min intervals and longer if its cold. Rinse check and repeat as nec. It seems to work really well to soften the knobs on the tire.
