For onroad, the center diff is not necessary. The added rotational weight plus the drag from diff gears actually will hurt the performance of the drivetrain. The basic premise is that onroad has way more traction than that of offroad so the need for a center diff is not necessary.

Spools are usually used on the front. A spool / solid axle has no diff action when going through turns. It is positraction all the way. People have found that using a front spool on high traction surfaces provide more control in terms of throttle and brake versus a diff. If you look at what most of the fast guys are running on their 1/10th electric TCs they're mostly running a spool up front.
