Also, from the pic below, it looks like you only need to remove 4 screws to get to the diff and there should be enough clearance so that the shock bottoms don't need to get removed, no?
I havent noticed the hole making any difference. If you think it will you can always drill another hole on the opposite side
You can probably key the diff out even with the shocks attached but its a lot easier if you unbolt the tops or pop the bottoms off and also open one of the toplinks on either side.
