If the pipe is hard coated you can use a scotch brite pad and it looks new when your done.I use them on all my pipe's coated or not.What does it matter if you see a # or not?You know what pipe it is !
Think he was asking because at large events in tech they spec everything to make sure it's legal for the event. He may know what pipe it is but if they can't see the efra # then they won't and he could fail post race spec.
