Best way to seat them without a tooling kit is to use the crank and a flywheel to seat them while the block is still hot. Just insert the crank like normal, and install the flywheel with collet and tighten it down with the nut. Should seat the bearings properly.

I didn't mind spending the money once to get a good tooling set. Makes life much easier. I change all of my engine bearings as well as all of my buddies'.
