Look closely. The hole is in the bottom of that slot, down through the bushing. So the side with the hole faces the crank.

Some rods have a slot on both sides but the hole is only on one side.

Another way to tell is to look closely at the lower bushing. One side of the bushing has a nice rounded chamfer, the other does not. Rounded side ALWAYS goes against the crank with the un-rounded side against the rear cover.
