When you use larger pinions and larger spur gears, (88/45) there will be more of the teeth in contact, and a smoother transition from one tooth to another. That makes the 88/45 combination stronger, and more efficient. However, you won't notice that at all, as the gears we use are over-engineered for our use anyway!
If ever I get the choice, I always run the largest gears I can for those reasons - old habits of an engineer!! HTH
The only difference besides those listed by SlowerOne, is motor position. The motor is extremely heavy, and where it is in the pod can have an effect on handling. The huge disparity in size between the two combinations listed, changes motor position greatly, and that can change the way the car behaves, at apex and during exit mostly. The further the weight is moved to the rear, the more "pendulum effect" you induce in the car. Just something to think about.
