It depends on the angle of the hit. I'm a trrible driver, and crash on a regular basis, and the only time I reliably killed a front or rear arm was when a tire caught the edge of the barrier. Side sliding hits and front impacts are usually survivable, but when the track reaches out and grabs your wheel, the arm will break. It's a safety feature. If the arms were aluminium, the hubs would break instead and you'd damage a larger quantity of more expensive parts, possibly including shock shafts and CVDs. Arms are relatively cheap compared to rebuilding the entire corner of your car.
