This is what we've been doing for the Puget Sound Fast Boys series here in the Seattle area at the
Area 52 track. It's a 6-race series with 1 throw out and our last series race is coming up in September. Each class has three 5-min qualifying heats on live loop with the best time/# of laps determining your placement in the A, B mains with 2 bump ups from B to A. Even if you finish dead last in the B-main you still get points assigned.
It's a pretty simple point system and allows the sportsmen racers to keep in contention with the sponsored guys for series-type races. For example if the top 4 all get hit by a bus and I manage to make the A-main in the last race I have the chance at a podium finish for the series...
