If it starts if he pours fuel into the carb, then it sounds like it is not getting any fuel on the bottom.

Check your Idle gap, Pull full line from carb and make sure fuel is getting to the carb while turning over the motor. This will also check backflow pressure from the line on the pipe.

If you think it is too rich, prime it good then remove the fuel line to carb and try to turn it over. If it does start like this and then dies then it is getting to much fuel.

You could always reset all needles to factory and start there.
