Check the front bearing for air leaks. Block the carby air inlet and exhaust outlet, connect a bit of fuel tube onto the carby fuel inlet. Then get some very soapy water, brush the soapy bubbles on to the motor and blow into the fuel tube. If the front bearing is leaking, put a new one in. At the same time check for air leaks around the carby base, etc.
Also check that both the front and back bearings are spinning freely.
almost every high end .21 onroad motor ive owned had a tiny leak thru the front bearing? also as for the rod, change the first one after a gallon, and go from there every gallon sounds like overkill a bit to me, but who knows, i would think after first swap out, i usually go every OTHER gallon...
