Because the flang the bearings are placed a tiny bit further from each other which lowers the sideway play. But indeed it minimized the needed shims.
For those who have used many axial bearings, keep the steel plates and use a brass ring 10x5mm as gliding bearing, nor more failing axial bearings for sure!
These brass rings can be found in any hardware store, 10 for a dollar....
