Are you still running the plastic bearing inserts for the rear diff? The stock plastic ones get sloppy and ring and pinion will start to slip. Not sure if that's what your describing, it will sound like a popping sound at first, you will hear it while braking or accelerating through a rough section.
Also, I've never heard of anyone using drag break in 1/8 scale but I guess you could.
+1 i had the same problem.
new plastic ones will fix it
aluminum ones will last a lot longer.
