Default A missing tooth on main gear

So i went to start my buggy the other day and i started it but then after about 3 seconds i hear a really high ringing sound then a crack then the engine stops So i figured my shoes were blown and a bearing blew up. My shoes were blown but my bearings were fine, and i bought new shoes and springs and put them on there. And i put the engine back on and aligned it, and just as a check, i rotated the clutch bell. It was a good mesh but then it jammed and i noticed that it jammed on a missing tooth gap on my main gear

I know i have to buy a new main gear, but would could have caused this? my bearings werent exploded when i checked my clutch bell so the clutch bell didnt come off of alignment on the crank, so what could have caused it? I dont want it to happen again!
