I've seen guy's cut tires down the middle and make them narrower and they seem to hold up pretty well.
yup you just cut along the first mold line inside the switches. I myself have done it several times and it works very well. I prefer the old style switches over the new 38 series ones anyway. Just make sure you use good bands when mounting them. I use 2 panther bands when I do mine, but if you don't have a set you can use big rubberbands or electrical tape wrapped tightly.
