Ive filtered my fuel before for this same reason and it was fine. I bought a cheap fuel filter from Walmart and I push the fuel through it with a fuel bottle into a clean gallon jug. A friend of mine used the paint funnel method to do the same thing. He made it sound like the paint filter method works really easily.
