Or another possible problem is because you have been running it lean. The P/S are now shot and can't hold compression. If you can with the plug in turn the fly wheel over easily then it's probably shot. Even if your getting some compression resistance is more likely because its cold and everything is tight. When it warms up it the sleeve expands and it dies again. Making it difficult to start until it cools. Even when you get it started it dies out quickly because its way warn and does not take much heat for it expand beyond the limits of a good seal.

This does not mean that that's whats wrong however it's another possibility. How old is the engine in gallons through?
