That seems very odd. I too live in the corn state and our pits are full of people running byrons gen 2 fuel with nothing but good things to say about it.

I am fairly new to rc but I used to be a mechanic and the symptoms your describing would lead me to believe that either some type of contaminant entered your engine from the fuel or air side to cause that type of damage or the engine was improperly tuned. Now if you told me that it wouldnt hold a tune or that things like the carb slide were gumming up and sticking it would lead me to think that the fuel would be the culprit but if you are talking about actual scarring of the piston/sleeve and bearings fuel would not be the culprit unless you mixed your own fuel and left the oil out or didnt add enough.
