you guys are exactly right! those are heat sinks that draw heat up through the screws that mount to the motor plate. these are also prototypes from troy crabtree (he makes the spools that have been advertised on this thread). these were the fist phase of this type of heatsink, and we found that they sit a little to close to the spur gear. we did some hand fitting there at the reedy race to move them further forward, and the new versions will have that problem fixed. also i think troy said something about making more/taller fins...

but beside that, they worked great, lowering my motor temps by about 15 degrees!!!
