The unobtanium shafts have been used by AE for a number of years now, and Ive found them to be quite good. Gold shafts in the kits has happened since the TTR takeover.
You may just have an issue of manufacturing tolerances between the shock bodies and the shaft (assuming the plastics remain the same batch to batch).
