A diff is OK in my opinion with carpet/rubber tires or really rubber tires in general. I prefer the spool on carpet and asphalt. It's always faster but a little harder to drive and setup the car.
Also running a spool or oneway can break more if you hit hard. If I want to play it safe I would use a diff. But when I want to really see how much I can get out of the car I run the spool.
Just an FYI, I tried both spool and 1-ways at the IIC, my laptimes averaged about 3/10ths faster with the 1-way. Even in mod there was nowhere on that track that I needed to use the brakes, the spool just felt like it bound the car up a bit too much in the corners.
