you never want to place any electrical device where it can get some air on a nitro vehicle. Splash some gas on it and your screwed. That's why servos and transponders are waterproof!
This advice was given to me by Eric Beier from HT batteries, maybe his regulator is waterproof. "do not put the metal end of the regulator in foam or in the bottom of the battery box. It needs a little air around it to breathe."
Mine is in the receiver box surrounded by all the cables from the servos, etc.
