You have to take half the truck apart to replace the spur gear. I was at the truck race in Stockton there were a couple of trucks that were setting up their spur gear. Many racers have little experience with Tamiya pinions they cost $8 and need to be replaced every couple of race days. Also the Tamiya gear is a metric 48 pitch so if you are going to use a replacement gear make sure it the correct gear.
If you use a regular 48 pitch gear an you would have to use a 23t to get a mesh in the 19t mounting holes.
IMHO
There's no such thing as "metric 48 pitch". It's just called 0.6 mod, and when converted from metric is actually roughly 42 pitch. That's like calling a metre a "metric yard".
