Doing this has kept my diffs from leaking after a lot of use. I can't explain the exact reason why the addition of the o-ring seems to increase the likelyhood that the diff could leak, but I've had good success leaving it out

I must say that I have been racing with VBC cars for 3 years now, and not one leak at all, with the o-ring and the paper gasket installed.
