In my 25+ years of racing it didn't matter what side the diff thrust head bolt was on. The vehicles all performed as expected.
If you find a method that works for you, great! I don't plan on trying to convince you one way is better than the other.
The instructions do tell you which side the bolt head goes on, whether you are using the 3 or 4 gear trans. I have seen a couple times where people have diffs that loosen up on their own and the screw was on the wrong side according to the instructions and when flipped over the problem was solved.
As long as I have been running AE cars it (bolt head) has usually been on the right side of the car, regardless of spur gear orientation.
