I ran that conversion in my car. I liked it, but the conversion didn't work quite like I expected it to. The graphite pieces on the side are too tall to use the o-ring to hold the battery in. I ended up using a piece of TKO lipo anti-slip tape under the battery and then taping it in.
Other than that it worked well. I thought it made the car more consistent through the corner at our track which is lower traction.
Just wondering if you tried running the o-ring under the graphite as opposed to over it, might have been enough to close down the gap you encountered.
