I always get a steel or aluminum idler gear. (assuming that's what you are talking about stripping out)
The plastic ones suck, especially if you are running a powerful motor. I am all 17.5, and the plastic ones still strip.
I would think it would be pretty hard to put the wrong combo of inserts... Unless maybe you went low on the diff, and high on the idler... check the mesh with 1/2 the tranny case off.
