agreed,a drivetrain that spins for ages will often have a large rotating mass....yes i admit a free drivetrain will spin for longer but a large rotating mass carrying a lot of momentum will allow the drivetrain to spin for longer.

if you run your bearings dry then they will get hot and often collapse..or collapse easier than a lubed bearing (this was the common cause of xray layshaft bearings collapsing..getting to hot from them running dry)

i run all my bearings with both sheilds removed (apart from the small metal shielded bearings) with a drop of LRP bearing oil in each one....after each run i spray a bit of motorspray (well mine is solvent spray, works same but smells nicer..muahaha lol) in each hub bearing and drop a bit of bearing oil there, they seem to run nicely and they aren't feeling gritty yet..i have run them shieldless since i built the car.
