I did some testing with one using 2.5 million CST. Bear in mind that I didn't make any set-up changes beyond swapping the spool for the gear diff but I felt it made the car more nervous and induced over steer. just my 2 cents.
17.5 gearing/timing is very much motor and track size/layout dependent. Most of the common motors out there have their own thread. You'll be more likely to get complete info there.
