The shaft is not shorter, that's the way it is. You need to add those red small foam and follow the manual instruction.
For the set up, just to make sure you build your drive train correctly or it will be loud, I add a 0.1 shim from behind the drive shaft that hold the spur gear.
The other set up is mostly the same like the other car and is a preference. Yes, I also using 3000 oil diff.
