That would have been the intelligent way to go about it, but no, I had to do it the hard way..
I found, by ordering the wrong cable that there are two types of usb, A and B in all sizes.

That's a male to female, won't work. It looks like the mini end is male, but it's female if you look closer. It almost got me too when I was researching which to buy.
