I didn't think I'd need one either until I broke the steering rack and replaced it with the aluminum one. After that I broke 2 servo arms before I replaced them with a Kimborough servo saver. Each time I broke something I didn't think I hit the boards all that hard but apparently I was wrong.
I use a Spektrum 6040 servo in my S1, it's a pretty strong servo so maybe it doesn't give much when I take a hit to the front wheels so something else gives, the rack or the servo arm.
I'd start with at least the servo saver then the rack if it doesn't hold up.
