I reckon they just went 14 because they didn't want other people to be able to fit 12mm wheels on
I wish the industry would pick a wheel standard and stick with it (hopefully 12mm)! I couldn't tell you how many front small hex losi xx4/xxx-4 and AE B44 wheels and pin drive rear wheels I've stripped over the years.
