For the center shock I'd go with the latest black spring set, that set has the very soft "red dot" springs in it and is the closest to the gold spring from the Miata Mini kit that most F1 racers try to get.

You can use a silver can if you choose.
It will definitely save you money, may help keep the car under control if not fully dialed but will of course require maintenance, most likely be slower and will also drop off in power a bit during the 10 minute races.
A basic 21.5 brushless will save you crap tons of aggravation in the long run without question.
