The well established companies (HPI/Tamiya/etc.) use good materials and are durable enough. But the wheels are not protected by a body, and therefore not what you would call "basher friendly". It has a parallel to full scale racing. NASCAR cars can take a tap and a nudge now and again. While F1 and Indy leagues do not use the phrase "rubbing is racing".
You will find that most of the RC F1 racers have respect for this as well.
