Taps can't hurt, unless like Wildcat said they leave it too loose. Some of the screws go really deep and that causes a lot of resistance and stress on the hex during the initial tap.

Wow, I guess ya get what you pay for here. I agree with your thoughts on the batteries though, we have about ten of them and they've all held up great. Great punch too.
