You may be dipping into a low voltage state if the cells can't put out...

As far as cheep radios, I've seen as many problems with certain "High End" types...

I'd bet more on the lines of low-voltage to the receiver.
Even if the light stays on it may be dipping on the little bursts.
I cant imagine the TX is freaking out when you pull the trigger.
