not 100% sure where u went wrong but u should shim the diff in the way that it fits securely and doesn't rub the chassis.
diff shims can be bought from basically any rc shop, i know kyosho sell them...

more teeth on a pinion=more top end speed, but slower acceleration and can cause strain on the motor, esc and battery(s)
spur gear is opposite; less teeth=more top end speed
