Default Motor tooo HOT

Ok I am new to this so give me a break

Got a Rapor ,we all know (now) the 12t motor is good but does not last long

cutting to the problem

Got a 540 13Tx2 with bearings

Used stock gears and stock battery

the connections to the motor come un solidered every time I run it

last time the pos side where it hooks to motor 210 deg

the motor is only 140, the neg is around 120

I tried another 13Tx2 motor that had connectors on the motor not solider

and the back plastic part melted where the screws hold the conector on the motor

WHAT UP

Thanks for any and all help

I'm not too sure what's wrong there(though the quality of connections is the first thing I'd look at, & also look for any contacts that could be shorting together, like a glob of solder being too close to another contact tab), but you should know that the section of the forums you originally put this in is not really for those kinds of questions(the Site forum is about the website itself). That's why I moved it to the Rookie Zone, it's a good place for general questions & to learn about the site as well....

Sounds like you replaced a 550 motor with a 540, which means the new motor is over-geared and overheating. I'd also check the quality of the solder joints, since they shouldn't fail at 210 deg. F - chances are, that motor was far warmer than that if the solder joint failed.

I'd start with a larger spur and smaller pinion, and see if the motor overheats. I'd reduce the pinion by at least 4 teeth, perhaps more if the motor mount allows the motor to be moved closer to the spur gear.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies yes I went from a 550 to a 540
I cant find a 550 with bushings and brushes
I will get the smaller gear I have the 90 on the back now
this is the second motor I have had this problem
same kind and size
The first one is the one that melted
I told the hobby shop that I did not want my money back just why did it happen
All I got was "You got a bad motor"
So THanks to all of you out there for the help

And I live in Tulsa Ok so another shop is not a option

Only online stuff

Before you start changing gears around i would definitely check the solder joint first. The negative and positive side should be nearly the same temperature and the motor casing itself shouldn’t be too far off either. Because the one terminal is way hotter than the other makes me what to say its just a bad connection that’s providing too much resistance.

You're in the Tulsa area? If you don't mind, I'm curious, what shop told you you had a bad motor? And if you still have trouble with it & need some more experienced help, you could head over to Adams Creek Raceway in Broken Arrow(you can see the address & a map on their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ACRCOffRoad?fref=nf ), & one of us racing there on Tuesday evenings should be able to help(though unfortunately, Tuesdays are the only times you'll find us there, as they stopped racing on Saturdays). I'm planning to be there Tuesday next week, if you still need help by then, just let me know(I'm easy to spot, I run a 2WD & 4WD buggy, all done in Oklahoma State colors, & I look like one of the oldest guys there)....

Most brushed 550s went away with the transition to brushless; your best bet would be to try ebay to find old stock, although replacement brushed 550 motors will eventually dry up.

Moving to brushless is definitely the way to go...

Ah, ok, yes, that's Hobbytown, & aside from Alex(he knows what's what & is a real racer), the rest of the people there seem to be hit & miss(some might be knowledgeable, others, not so much, ). but there is also a shop in Jenks, called Urban RC(& you can find info & where they are from this link: http://findplace.us/Oklahoma/Jenks/Urban-RC-Hobbies ), they should be about finished moving to a bigger place in their shopping center, they're good guys & may be able to help also....

Thats funny, my local hobby town is just like that. There is one guy who seems to be very knowledgeable and helpful and the rest of the staff are just kind of there.

And to the OP... good luck with solving your issue. sounds like grizzbob knows his stuff. Thats great you have someone close by to offer assistance.

Default Brushless

Ok I have had it
I am going Brushless

Any feed back on can size

I think Brushless sizes their motors differently

I would like a 550 T12 just like the Titan motor that came with the truck

Not looking to race but love to race around the yard and dirt

Need Options

Best motor for the bucks for all around fun

Thanks again for each reply

As long as you're just playing & not intending to race it seriously, then I'd say something like this( http://www.falconsekido.com/products...-combo-for-sct ) should be a good, affordable start. Though it'd be easier to give suggestions if we could know more about what your budget is(the one I linked to is a decent budget-minded setup, but if you want the option to bolt in more power, then a rethink might be in order)....

Oh, & I have to admit, I'm still unclear on exactly what vehicle you have, can you give a little more info on it(Brand, model, scale, 2WD or 4WD, etc.)? That would also help us figure out what should be good & what might not be powerful enough....
