Default 1st rc car purchase?

I'm brand new looking to purchase my first hobby level car. I'd eventually like to try racing, but just want to get the hang of it at first and have some fun. I've read some reviews and it seems like the traxcus slash or rustler would be good beginner options. Any thoughts on those or others I should be looking at? I'd like to stay $250 or less.

Thanks!

I have a 2wd Slash and I love it. It's not a great race truck, but it's tough as nails. My 8yo is able to drive it with no problems, and it's able to take whatever abuse he throws at it. It's also well represented at most hobby shops. Whatever you get, make sure your local hobby shop carries parts for it.

If you want something multipurpose I'd look to and rtr SC10. It's a good viable race truck if you choose to go that direction.

Hi there just got back into the hobby and I can say the slash is a durable truck. I have the 4x2 and a 4x4 models and they are well built, have plenty of parts available ( I have found lots of stuff easy to get online ). Also you local hobby shop or track hopefully will stock parts and be able to help you with upgrade should you chose that route.

I have bashed both and bounced them off of lots of stuff.

Also took them to the track because I am still learning and want something to keep up with my lack of skill. Nosed the 4x4 many times on the double jump, and it just kept going. My son drives the 4x2 and its takes everything he can throw at it.

I had good luck buying used but you have to know what your looking at so you don't get screwed. If you don't then you may want to buy new. I also asked lots of questions on here and did lots of reading.

Good luck and watch out it's an addictive hobby...

It also depends on if you are really interested in the whole R/C thing and think your going to stick it out and really get in to racing then I would look towards Losi or team associated RTRs they are good to start out and when you get the hang of it with a few upgrades here and there they will be 100% race ready.

But if its something that you want to test out and lets say after you bit you find out that R/C racing isen't your thing or the whole R/C scene in general isen't your thing then I would get a Traxxas Slash. Then you won't be out any extra money and if need be Traxxas R/Cs tend to sell really quick any where.

2 wd drive Slash. I still have mine from 4 years ago. It's not a competitive racer but I still have ball with it every now and then. I now have an 1/8 scale buggy for racing.

Not fully sure I'll get into racing, so slash may be good to start. I also like the waterproof feature. I'm in Minnesota, so it'd be nice to know it could handle a little snow. It looks like you buy battery and charger separately unless there's somewhere that sells the whole package I'm not aware of. Any recs on the battery or charger I should be aware of?

Default have fun

Dynamite makes a good line of chargers, with a real warrantee. I don't use them but know people that have had good luck with them.

SMC probably has the best value going in batteries. I do use SMC.

The Slash is definitely the way to go. Great for bashing and can take a beating and when you decide to try racing the Slash is fine to get your feet wet. I agree with the person that said the SC10 is a great truck but I think the Slash will be less frustrating as far as breaks go. Have fun

I wouldn't take it outside when it's too cold. Plastic gets brittle, but it will take some cold. They are tough, but if you ever want to race, they cost a lot to make competitive.

Buy a Slash to learn the basics, and get a feel for controlling and maintaining an RC vehicle. If you decide to go racing, plan on upgrading to a more race-worthy chassis.

I heard a story of somebody who drove a Slash into a swimming pool, fished it out and kept going. I wouldn't try it
