I recently got back into the hobby after taking a decade off, and I went in with a $500 budget...that did not work at all.
I ended up in the $1500 range to run a TLR 22SCT in the 17.5 stock class. I could have spent less, but I also would have electronics that would need to be replaced almost immediately once my skill level came up.
I understand that some budgets cannot be broken, and if that is true in your case I would recommend saving more money and buying the right equipment the first time.
Good Luck

unless your track runs a super stock 13.5 race then the motor and esc will need replacing. also be aware that some of the most essential items pertaining to the driving of the car (the chassis, and diff) are different from the kit. the chassis is ok, just a bit heavy compared to the kit, but the diff might need switching to a ball diff to be able to run certain surfaces.

This is what i was thinking of getting
Losi 22 rtr 350
Jconcepts barcodes (green) 30
savox 1258tg 80
total 460$
Later a spektrum dx4c because i have had very good luck with spektrum products
I am going to keep the 13.5t system because that's really all i can handle

13.5 is not a class they race in Ottawa. This year they started racing 17.5 blinky for 2wd buggy, according to their forum. I thought they still run open mod 2wd buggy as well though I don't see that listed. They definitely run it for their big summer race. If they do still run mod, the 13.5 could be used in that class, most guys wouldn't run lower than a 9.5 in that class anyway.
I just noticed they don't mention ROAR approved 17.5 motors. If you happen to be in the Toronto area within the next month, I'd be willing to give you a Trinity D3.5 17.5. I have 2 of them I can't use anymore. If you still don't have one by July 25th, I'll be in Ottawa and can bring one. Send me a PM and we can probably meet up somewhere.

LOL. It's funny how someone suggest the RC10b4.2 and you go with the losi =P just made me giggle either one is about the same quality I suppose. Me personally I went with the RC10b4.2. My father and i both bought one. Now yes it's no where top of the line but damn out of the box that thing has some balls. We have both put at most (besides battery and charger) 30-40bucks into the thing to upgrade certain parts. mainly putting washers between pieces to eliminate a lot of unnecessary movement ( and I need to buy new tires because iu destroyed mine) but those are common expenses. I love my car. it goes fast as heck and since I am a begginer I need to learn how to control this first before upgrading any real parts like engines and servos. I say go for one of them and have fun and learn! It's a hobby / investment why plunge so deep in right away only to get frustrated when something breaks or next month a new motor comes out and you are already left behind!

Remember you can always go with a used roller, etc. Plenty of used stuff around, and you could very likely get in with quality stuff, with even some spare parts, for around $500. I would just stay away from used lipos, everything else is likely OK. Many tracks have an area they allow for consignment sales, this is a great place to look for deals.

My receipt getting back into racing with 1/10th scale mod buggy was $1000. I blew it a little but I didn't stick middle of the road with my options. I walked out at $1185.

Also If i was going to build a kit i would get a schumacher because the hobby store at SAR carries alot of schumacher parts.
