Default Need help with selecting servos.

I am currently using a surplus servo from one of my dad's model airplane. is this sufficient? i am noticing that the left Turing radius is very large opposed to the right. do RC cars have different servos opposes to airplanes?

Not really, they will work the same. If your turning radius is that far off it is one of 2 reasons...

1.) Your EPA is way off on your controller.
2.) You did not center your servo before you placed the servo horn on the servo.

Check both of these and I bet you find it is one or the other.

the instructions say to put the servo on the left side of the chassis. does this matter or does the servo have to be exactly centered on the chassis?

It doesn't matter where the servo is mounted, left side, right side, center, it matters that the SERVO is centered when you attach the servo horn.

Take the servo horn off ( this is the end piece you connect to the servo so you are able to turn the front wheels )

plug everything up, turn it all on, then set all of your trim to the center on your controller, once you do that, place your servo horn on the servo close to center as possible, then you can either trim the servo for center, or adjust the turnbuckles on the car for center.

What car are you putting this in?

The servo arm should be parallel to the bell crank arm. This will keep the speed and throw equal in both directions.

1st you need to put all your steering links arms in a neutral position.. then put ur radios EPA to 100% if u have that .
Then put servo arm on servo and connect it to steering link..check to see that u have same travel amount on both sides..

Had a xxx4 that would not turn right untill I took steering links apart and set all to a neutral position so i had same amount of travel on both sides.. That fixed my issue..

This may come off rude and I apologize in advance for this but u guys are going to have to dumb it down for me a little bit. I literally just started a couple of months ago.

Secondly, metalsoft I took your advice and took the servo horn off. What happened next puzzled me quite a bit. While the horn was off and I was trimming the steering I realized that even thought the servo was trimmed fully toward the left the wheels would be oriented in a forward direction. When I trimmed it fully towards the right the car would steer an extreme right. Does this mean the servo is broken or can I re-center the servo?

I am currently using a hitec HS-81 servo

The thing I learned as a rookie too was my radio has a reverse option for my servos. I must have set it to rev by mistake and couldn't figure out why it was backwards. Just an FYI.
