The best way to turn off your engine?

Stopping the flywheel is the recommended procedure, most will stick in a shoe or plastic stop so they don't scuff the flywheel.
Pinching the fuel line is ok but since you've emptied out the block it'll take more work to start the next time. We'd been snuffing it by blocking the stinger for years but seem to blow out a lot more front bearings than everyone around us so finally quit doing that.

I just place my finger on the flywheel. It takes very little effort to stop the engine, and I see no need for fancy plastic tools or screwdrivers.

Yup, finger on the flywheel is the easiest and cheapest way to do it.
If you haven't done it this way before it can be quite intimidating seeing the flywheel spinning so fast. All common sense will tell you to not stick your finger onto a rapidly spinning part. But it truly doesn't hurt and the engine stops almost immediately.
Try it, I dare ya!!
Btw, you're more likely to burn your finger covering the exhaust that way.

I'm guessing that if you guys are serious about using your finger on the fly wheel that it's when the motor is at idle and not a runaway situation
Most guys by me seem to use their starter box, with it turned off. Works well
I used the "cover the pipe" method in the past but didn't know it could be an issue....won't do that anymore.

Hmmm finger in the flywheel not sure, I'll give it a try.
For me covering the exhaust it seems to flood the engine, it was really hard to start it again

Under no circumstances should you ever put you finger near the fly wheel back when we did on road a man tried to shut his car down via the fly wheel and wound up shreding his finger down to the bone. (not trying to be a dick I would just rather not have some one lose a finger) I was tought to shut mine off from the pipe or the fuel line because it slowly stops the engine rather than bringing it to a sudden hault.

Never been much on pinching the fuel line. Ya it shuts it off but the motors lubrication comes from the fuel too. As the line runs dry the motor leans out and the oil go's with it. I've worked in the marine industry for years and used to see people trailer the boat then remove the fuel line. It's a two stroke motor and you just took the lubricating ability away from the motor and it damages it over time. I wear gloves when I'm marshalling and have my tuning driver in my pocket too so I'll bump the flywheel. If it's a run away I'll pop the breather if I can and put my finger over the carb.
