12 vs 14 gauge from ESC to battery
In my Losi 1/10 scale XXX-SCT, there is mostly 12 gauge wire. However, the builder who changed the wiring from the Tekin RS ESC to the battery used Deans plugs and 14 gauge wire. Should it be 12 gauge? Does it make a difference? Is there a chance the ESC could ask for too much amperage that the 14 gauge could not handle it, get hot, melt, etc?

TakeAim With that being said, going to 12 awg will allow more current to go from battery to ESC and with less voltage drop than 14 will equating to small improvement in performance. I personally don't believe that there will be enough current, under normal operation, to melt the jacket on the 14 awg wire. If a major failure occurs, then yes, but 12 awg would do the same. |
As long as you keep your gearing in check, and your drivetrain running smoothly 2wd SCT should NOT have any problems with 14ga, especially decent 14ga.
Gear it to the moon, with bad bearings and too tight of a mesh between pinion and spur, with lots of dirt inside the gearbox, and even 12ga will have problems! :D |
