Default Just starting, considering kit/rtr and motor winding options

I'm new to RC, and would like to start in off-road, probably something in 1/10 scale, probably 4wd, and probably a truck (but then again, maybe a buggy) .

After reading the forums (and reading, and reading) I don't really have a sense of what an appropriate size motor is for racing at my local clubs. I realize I'll have plenty to learn, but would prefer my first setup to allow me to compete.

What prevents folks from racing something absurdly large? Most kits seem to come with something in the 3300kv range, bue I see up to 5.5T in a 550 (truck) size motor, which I think is something in the high 8000kv sensorless range. Where does everyone stop?

Regarding getting a kit/roller versus a RTR or BND setup, again, same thing. Are there any RTR's worth considering, or is that just not going to be competitive?

Thanks in advance!
