normally yes, but it comes down to skill. ill use my friend as an example. he raced offroad buggies all thru middle and high school and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation. then he went to college and sold all his stuff. 10 years went by and i talked him into getting back into it. he paid $350 for a slash RTR with stock battery, radio and charger. he showed up at the track and won the A main after 10 years with everything that came in the box. he was the only one using the traxxas radio and battery.

it can be done cheaply if you have the skill. i know that i could never do that!!
