Should tuning a transmission be this hard?

How do you know it isn't engaging? Sometimes, especially at a track, it can be hard to hear the change in pitch. Some cars shift very smoothly, my V one RR jerks into 2nd gear. Or, maybe it's engaged in 2nd gear all the time?
