opinion in kit vs rtr?
I'm thinking of getting my first kit. I figure it will teach me more about set-ups. However, the slash 4x4 seems like a really good value. If I get a kit it will be either the associated rc8be or rc8te. What would you do? I already have a blitz, sc10, and revo. thanks in advance for your opinion.

If you want opinions about which model to get I will not be much help, since I do not have any of the models you listed.
But as far as a kit vs RTR I feel pretty strongly that you will gain some very valuable experience if you build a kit. Many great vehicles come RTR, so it makes this a difficult choice for many people. As a guy who has been playing with toy cars for many years I still occasionally have to do a complete teardown of a RTR to find that pestering little noise or hangup; when I build a kit I can almost always go right to the spot of the problem since I have a better understanding of the internals right from the start. This is a pretty small issue since most RTRs get a complete rebuild fairly quickly anyways, but it really does something for my confidence nonetheless.

build whenever u can, really encompasses the experience and this hobby. even take the RTR that u choose and tear it down and rebuild it up so you know its right. u could start easy and work ur way up to full teardown whatever you are comfortable with. this way u learn the car, how it works, what needs attention and in turn you have joined our hobby and ur car will thank you by returning many days of fun.
best of luck

for myself i would prefer car kit. one thing is there is satisfaction assembling yourself. another thing is if you got trouble. you can look back at manual to fix what you missed. another thing you get to know what parts which interconnects. so when you go to LHS and order replacement parts. basically you already knew what you want.
you can opt for rtr but make sure the documentations are good. should u need to dismantle for servicing.

i would recommend going for a kit (race version ) instead. This will allow you to build the kit. That way when you have an issue you are some what familiar with its contruction. Now on the other hand RTR generally come with electronics, motors etc which will be cheaper if your budget allows. And kits RC's will have improved parts, threaded shock bodies improved tuning ability etc.

It all depends on if you want to run the car now or wait how many hours it takes to build it! Yes building a kit is cool and you learn alot, but you can always get the slash beat it down then tear it down and put it back together again. Plus kits cost alot more because you always want to put the best stuff in them! Thats how it usually ends up for me!

Def will learn more from a kit, lots more than with a rtr. If the 4x4 Slashes are being parted on Ebay, you can do what I did - I scratch built a Tmaxx using parts from eBay, was a lot of fun and a taught me a ton about the truck. Was more expensive that way, but it was what I wanted at the time and very entertaining as well.

it depends on people too. some ppl would buy the kit, engine, servo & misc. they tell the LHS to assemble for them & fine tune the vehicle as well. after they are done playing. they just sent it to repairs, watch over & wait.
so basically the car became rtr instead of kit which actually was.
