As Oldschoolracer has said, learning how to race a 2wd buggy really disciplines your throttle thumb. I learnt a lot about that many years back when I was more into off road cars.
Even with good grip and a comfortable setup you still have to learn entry speed, braking and then the exit speed through the corners, in time you will learn to get the lap consistancy
As for setup, well, its all down to personal preference. Some people like a car that will steer quickly for the precise moment, others adapt more of a smooth, almost lazy steering rate. But, there is no right or wrong way, whatever gets you around the track the best is the key Put the laps in, change one thing at a time and watch the pro's race. You will learn a lot.
The pro's will normally take the quickest route around the track. But they have a car which is setup well enough usually to put the car anywhere on the apex of the corners to get this kind of advantage.

Went to the local track last night. The track was pretty rough (rutted up) so it looks like a 1/10 scale 2wd electric truck will be what I will start out with.

if you want an m11, you sure want some top level stuff. go with a duratrax ice charger with a 15 amp or over power supply, what local track people say for me and maybe lipo for some nice runtime. checkpoint and trakpower are great. for nimh batteries id say trinity ib cells like the 4600's or smc energ 4600's.

I am most likely going to start out with a RTR set-up. My original plan was to do a 1/8 scale buggy with a brushless system, lipo batteries and a M11. However, I have been rethinking the idea and I am going to wait until I have more knowledge before I go in way over my head. So the logical thing, I think at this point is to start with a RTR kit and build from there. I really don't have any tools or anything right now so................might as well start at the ground level.
