Having worked for 2 different shops, I can tell you you aren't going to get rich if thats your intent! Also, it takes alot to have a LHS.
There are questions to consider before jumping into the Shop owner stage.
-Experience- customers will come to you to solve problems, if you don't know the product, you won't gain their confidence. You might get a p/t job at the LHS, if ones available, and learn about the hobby from the HS side.
-Capital ($$$ to back the project, Inventory isn't cheap!)
-Location/Competition? Is there a local demand for a(nother) LHS?
For example, in my town, I have 8 within 25-30 miles of me that have RC, half of those are mult. focus. There are another 3 that JUST do trains!
-Focus A "hobby" shop is more than just RC. There are Trains, Slotcars, rockets, models, woodcraft, etc. That adds a LOT to the mix if you plan to try and cover mult. arenas. Something to consider.
-Distributors Different distributors have different requirements. Some want credit history, some might have requirements on $$ spent per month, length of business operation, etc.
I would talk to a LHS owner and make some inquiries. i wouldn't get too personal, but just general stuff. The HOW, WHAT, WHY, etc. For me, I know most of the local shop owners and several know my history since i've worked for shops in the past. Most owners will be willing to share info, but you may need to schedule an appt. with them.
Good luck!
